Brief Guide to PhotoPlus 2018

Posted by Britrock on October 24, 2018

For a few days every year for decades, I include myself in a group of people that gather to ogle, drool, fondle and play with photo and cinematography equipment, products and services at Photoplus Expo ( in New York City. East Coast photography nerds already know the show, and the elite commercial, advertising and editorial photographers generally send a photo or lighting assistant to glean the right tech knowledge. As I’ve been attending for at least decade, I wanted to share my learnings with a small, not comprehensive guide to Photoplus 2018.

If you’re a regular event and portrait photographer, there are so many opportunities to enjoy and experience at the show, I’ve pulled together a not-exhaustive list of some of the events, sites, sights and places that happen at PhotoPlus Expo. AKA PPE.

Equipment is everywhere at the show, mirrorless cameras will likely dominate this year the attention this year, especially as it’s the first big US show post Photokina.

Canon R and Nikon Z cameras will probably be first on most people’s must see lists, don’t miss out on the other manufacturers. Zach Sutton, Lensrentals, wrote up a decent list of the gear announcements at that show, and provides a handy shopping list if you won the Megamillions draw this week, or a window shipping list for the rest of us. (

Show specials on equipment are everywhere at PPE including my favorites: B&H (, Adorama and my favorite to good deals at the show Midwest Photo. Individual equipment manufacturers are also offering discounts, and its worth stopping to learn more about products in person… its almost like reading the instruction manual of a product before using it. But its not. So do read the instruction manual, and please let my wife know I’m not her full time tech support person.

FREE – Show Floor seminars Photoplus is alive with free seminars and demonstrations, and more seem to be added every year. All offer a chance to learn, many offer a chance to win something. Here’s a quick list of the speaker schedules on the booths of Canon, Nikon, Unique Photo and Olympus.

Canon hosts their Explorers of Light, this year including Rick Sammon, Lyndsey Adler, Peter Hurley. In addition, there are live learning workshops with live shoots and instructors all day – 9am to 6pm. Schedule is here: (

Nikon will be live streaming the seminar presentations from their huge exhibit. Joe McNally (nicest bloke in photography?!), Jerry Ghionis, Corey Rich and more will present. Schedule and live stream details here: (

Olympus has a decent booth for a range of styles of images, with live models, full make up and lighting. Good hosts, and lots of shared knowledge. Scott Bourne, Tracie Maglosky, Jay Dickman and this year, host of “Tog Chat” Joe Edelman is in attendance. (

Sigma Not be out done, which seems to have been Sigma’s motto of late as they’ve introduced beautiful new lenses and worked hard to make a product customers really care about. Roman Kurywczak, Judy Host, Jim Koepnick and more host intimate seminars at the booth.

Unique Photo New Jersey’s very own B&H, Unique Photo, has a couple of booths at the show most years, and this year hosts Bobbi Lane, a brilliant master of light, Hanson Fong, and Bob Carey – a story not to miss. Plus live shoots.

PAID – Conference Sessions

Amongst the 90+ seminars in the educational sessions of the conference program, an additional fee is required to attend these. They’re generally informative, and present chances to meet the luminaries of the photo industry. In 2018,

Scott Kelby, Lyndsey Adler, Katrin Eismann, Greg Heisler, Tamara Lackey and many others, are amongst the world class image makers sharing their wisdom.

Here’s a link to the conference schedule, and at the foot of the page is the printed schedule that will be available onsite. (

The Palm Springs Photo portfolio reviews are excellent, but sold out time slots a long time ago. Add it to your to do list for next year. Its worth getting an experts eye on your work at whatever stage you are in your career.

As I finish writing this piece, I’ve noticed Michael DeStephano at Fstoppers, has also written-up a preparation guide for Photoplus. Worth taking time to read… perhaps in the badge pick up line 😉

Take business cards, comfortable footwear, carry as little as you need to survive a day long window shopping event. No need to pack a camera bag, or a camera vest (you’ll see plenty of those being sported at the show), but I’d recommend bringing snacks and water.

Enjoy the show, might see you there.
